The organizations responsible for the Hungarian-Slovak mutual Danube section together with research institutions are doing extensive tests in order to prepare measures that increase flood safety in the above mentioned area.

The total cost of the research in the framework of Hungary-Slovakia
Cross-border Co-operation Programme 2007-2013  is 432 004 EUR. 85% is provided by the European Union and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. On the project’s opening event  in Bratislava, the partners outlined the history of the project and  presented its objectives.

In order to strengthen DuReFlood floodplains on the mutual section of the Danube between Szap and Szob and to increase the river’s ecological values (HUSK/1001/2.1.2/0060) a project has been devised with the guidence of the Northern Transdanubian Water Authority Board and three other partners; the Slovak Water Management Institute (VUVH), the Slovak Water Management Compay (SVP), and the Water Management Department of Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
The project started on 1 May 2012. The leading partner signed the ERFA agreement on 31 August 2012. The project is due to finish  on 30 April 2014. The total cost is 432004 EUR.
The aim of the project is to prepare a study in order to ensure long-term flood protection and prevention, increase flood safety and decrease the negative impact of flooding on society and the economy. In addition, the measures designed will improve the ecological condition of the river Danube.

In line with the previous joint Hungarian-Slovak project results, this project on the Szap-Szob joint Danube section deals with the flood flow rate dynamics, including the effect of the river regulation works, the sediment flow and the effectiveness of the various protection measures.
The tests contain various combinations of regulations ( riverbed –flood area system) in both Slovak and Hungarian territories. The aim is to strengthen flood protection, the safety of the towns and villages in the endangered area, as well as increasing the revitalisation of the river’s unique ecology and protecting and improving the natural habitat.
The specific objective of the project is the creation of an appropriate database and a Hungarian- Slovak basic map of the joint river section between the Danube’s Szap-Szob section and the flood plain. By using the complete database, the passing flood events, the possible interventions, the testing of the effects of interventions are done by using 1D, 2D and 3D hydrodynamic and 3D morphologic model experiments.
